EU Temporarily Halts Fertilizer Import Tariffs to Cushion Agricultural Pressures

(MENAFN) The European Union has decided to pause customs duties on important nitrogen-based fertilizers for a period of one year, aiming to soften the economic strain on European farmers caused by the ongoing Iran conflict and disruptions linked to the Strait of Hormuz crisis.

The announcement came on Friday from the Council of the European Union, which confirmed that tariffs on critical inputs such as urea and ammonia will be temporarily removed. This step is intended to improve affordability and stabilize supply for agricultural producers across member states.

However, the suspension does not apply universally. The EU has specifically excluded fertilizer imports originating from Russia and Belarus from benefiting under this temporary tariff relief, maintaining trade restrictions on these countries.

According to the council, the decision is designed to counteract rising prices driven by the near-total disruption of shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy and goods passage.

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) cautioned in April that an extended blockage of the strait could escalate into a severe global food and agriculture crisis, significantly affecting food security worldwide.

EU officials estimate that lifting these duties will reduce costs for farmers and the fertilizer sector by roughly €60 million (about $69.6 million) in import fees, offering some financial relief during a period of volatility.

To balance market stability, the tariff exemption has been restricted to a defined quota, ensuring protection for domestic European fertilizer manufacturers while still easing pressure on agricultural imports.

The measure will officially take effect the day following its publication in the EU’s Official Journal.
