Trump Unveils Sweeping Ten Per Cent Global Import Tariff
“It is my Great Honor to have just signed, from the Oval Office, a Global 10% Tariff on all Countries, which will be effective almost immediately," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
The announcement followed a recent decision by the US Supreme Court that invalidated the majority of the president’s earlier tariff initiatives. In a 6-3 judgment, the justices determined that Trump had overstepped his legal authority by invoking legislation intended for national emergencies to justify wide-ranging import duties.
Reacting publicly, Trump sharply criticized the ruling. In another statement, he described the court’s verdict as “ridiculous” and maintained that the administration would continue pursuing mechanisms to boost federal revenue.
"Those members of the Supreme Court who voted against our very acceptable and proper method of tariffs should be ashamed of themselves.
"Their decision was ridiculous but, now the adjustment process begins, and we will do everything possible to take in even more money than we were taking in before!" he added.
According to official statements, the president formalized the policy through a proclamation establishing a temporary import levy. The tariff is scheduled to come into force on Feb. 24 at 12:01 a.m. EST (0501 GMT) and will remain in place for 150 days.
Officials indicated that select categories of goods will not be subject to the temporary duty, citing the need to shield key sectors of the domestic economy and ensure the measure effectively addresses trade payment disparities.
As outlined in a government fact sheet, the exemptions encompass essential minerals and metals, energy and related products, agricultural commodities such as beef, tomatoes, and oranges, pharmaceutical products and their components, certain electronic items, aerospace equipment, vehicles, and informational materials including books.
